CBG: The Mother of all Cannabinoids
Posted by Mari L. Miljour, Manager and COO on 14th Jun 2023
CBG stands for cannabigerol, which is one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemical compounds that interact with the endocannabinoid system in the human body, which plays a role in regulating various physiological processes.
CBG is often referred to as the "mother cannabinoid" because it is the precursor to other cannabinoids like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). In the early stages of cannabis plant growth, CBG is the primary cannabinoid present. As the plant matures, enzymes convert CBG into other cannabinoids, which means that CBG levels decrease significantly in the final harvested product.
CBG interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. The ECS is a complex network of receptors, endocannabinoids (naturally occurring cannabinoids in the body), and enzymes that help regulate various physiological processes, such as mood, pain sensation, appetite, and immune function.
While research on CBG is still in it's early stages, studies have suggested various potential therapeutic benefits associated with this cannabinoid. Some of the potential effects of CBG include:
1. Neuroprotective properties: CBG has shown promise in protecting neurons from damage and inflammation, potentially benefitting conditions such as Huntington's disease and multiple sclerosis.
2. Anti-inflammatory effects: CBG has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in pre-clinical studies, indicating its potential in managing inflammatory conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and glaucoma.
3. Pain relief: CBG may have analgesic properties and could potentially help in alleviating pain associated with conditions such as fibromyalgia and migraines.
4. Antidepressant and anxiolytic effects: CBG has shown potential in reducing anxiety and depression-like behaviors in animal models, although more research is needed to understand it's effects in humans.
It's worth noting that CBG is non-psychoactive, meaning it does not produce intoxicating effects commonly associated with THC. This makes CBG an attractive option for individuals seeking the potential benefits of cannabinoids without the psychoactive side effects.
At Asheville Hemp Farms, we have several options so you can enjoy CBG for yourself... pre-rolls, flower, and delicious gummies from both Akira and Small Axe.
As with any cannabinoid, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before using CBG, or any cannabinoid-derived product, for therapeutic purposes.
