What is the Entourage Effect?
Posted by Mari L. Miljour on 18th Jul 2023
The entourage effect refers to the synergistic interaction of various compounds found in cannabis plants, particularly cannabinoids, terpenes and other phytochemicals. It suggests that these compounds work together to enhance or modulate each other's effects, leading to a more comprehensive and beneficial outcome compared to isolated compounds.
Cannabis plants contain over 100 different compounds, with the most well-known ones being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). In addition to cannabinoids, cannabis also produces aromatic compounds called terpenes, which are responsible for the distinct smells and flavors associated with different strains.
When consumed together, cannabinoids and terpenes interact with various receptors in the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) and other molecular targets, potentially producing a more significant therapeutic effect than when used individually, For example, THC and CBD are known to have different effects on their own, but when combined, they may work together to produce a more balanced and nuanced response.
The entourage effect is believed to contribute to the overall therapeutic potential of cannabis and may influence its effects on pain relief, inflammation, anxiety, appetite modulation, and other physiological processes. However, more research is needed to fully understand the complexities and mechanisms behind the entourage effect and it's specific applications in various medical conditions.
It's worth noting that the entourage effect is primarily associated with cannabis and its compounds. Other plants and natural substances may exhibit similar interactions and synergies, but the term "entourage effect" is commonly used within the context of cannabis research and discussions.
